Today's account did a lot right. It fired a strategy that clearly wasn't working, it kept its drawdown tiny, and it obeyed its own risk rules even under pressure. On the scorecard that matters most — did you protect the account? — it passed.

And yet it kept bleeding. Why?

Because of one quiet mistake that fools almost every developing trader: mistaking activity for diversification. Worried that too much profit had come from a single day, the trader spread risk across a fistful of altcoins — ADA, DOT, XLM, XRP, ETH — all long, all at once. It felt prudent. It was the opposite.

Those coins don't move independently. They surf the same Bitcoin wave. So when the tape softened mid-morning, they didn't stop out one at a time — they went down together, three losses landing in the same hour. Five 'small' bets behaved like one oversized one.

Here's the teaching moment: real diversification isn't more tickets, it's uncorrelated tickets. And the cleanest, strongest trend on the screen all day was sitting right there, ignored — gold, marching higher while the alts chopped. One or two high-conviction crypto names plus gold as the true diversifier would have spread risk that actually behaved differently.

Spreading your size across ten versions of the same idea doesn't lower your risk. It just hides it — until the market collects on all ten at once.

The mentor’s take
Five longs on the same wave isn't a diversified book — it's one big bet wearing a disguise.
